Esther: A Portrait of Perseverance and Courage in the Face of Adversity

 

The story of Esther, set during the Persian Empire's golden age, is one of the most compelling narratives in the Bible. It is a tale of a young Jewish woman who, against all odds, rose to a position of power and used her influence to save her people from destruction. 1. Esther’s Background

Haman’s hatred for the Jews was fueled by Mordecai’s refusal to bow down to him, a slight he could not tolerate (Esther 3:5-6). Haman manipulated King Xerxes into issuing a decree that all Jews in the empire should be killed on a specific day, leading to panic and despair among the Jewish community.

Mordecai, knowing the gravity of the situation, turned to Esther for help. He urged her to go to the king and plead for the lives of her people. This was no small request. Approaching the king without being summoned was a capital offense, and even as queen, Esther risked her life by doing so. Mordecai’s words to Esther were both a challenge and a call to faith: “And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14).
