Esther: A Portrait of Perseverance and Courage in the Face of Adversity

Image
The story of Esther, set during the Persian Empire's golden age, is one of the most compelling narratives in the Bible. It is a tale of a young Jewish woman who, against all odds, rose to a position of power and used her influence to save her people from destruction. Esther's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, courage, and faith in God's providence.  1. Esther’s Background Esther’s story begins in a time of exile for the Jewish people. After the Babylonian conquest, many Jews had been dispersed throughout the Persian Empire, living as minorities in a foreign land. Esther, originally named Hadassah , was an orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai. Despite her humble beginnings, Esther was destined for greatness. When King Xerxes of Persia sought a new queen, Esther was among the young women brought to the palace. The Bible describes Esther as beautiful, but it was not just her physical appearance that set her apart; she also possessed grace, wisdom, and a ge...

Archaeological Discoveries That Support and Illuminate Bible Stories

Image
The Bible, a collection of sacred texts written over centuries, contains a rich tapestry of historical narratives, prophecies, poetry, and moral teachings. For centuries, scholars and believers alike have been fascinated by the historical accuracy of the Bible's accounts. Archaeology, the scientific study of ancient human activity through the recovery and analysis of material culture, has played a crucial role in shedding light on the historical context of these biblical stories. 1. The Dead Sea Scrolls: Preserving the Text of Scripture One of the most remarkable archaeological discoveries of the 20th century is the Dead Sea Scrolls. Discovered between 1947 and 1956 in caves near Qumran , by the Dead Sea, these ancient manuscripts include some of the oldest known copies of the Hebrew Bible, dating back to the third century BCE. The scrolls contain portions of nearly every book in the Old Testament, along with other Jewish writings. The significance of the Dead Sea Scrolls lies...

The Love of God: A boundless one

Image
The love of God is perhaps the most profound and central theme in the Bible, echoing through every book, chapter, and verse. It’s a love that transcends human understanding, a love that is unconditional, sacrificial, and redemptive. We’ll explore the depth of God’s love as revealed in Scripture and its transformative power in the lives of believers. 1. God’s Love in the Old Testament From the very beginning, the love of God is evident in the creation narrative. God’s love is shown in the creation of humanity in His own image, a unique relationship that signifies care, purpose, and affection. Even after the fall of humanity in the Garden of Eden, God’s love remains steadfast. He clothes Adam and Eve, providing for them even as they face the consequences of their actions. Throughout the Old Testament, God’s love is consistently portrayed in His covenant relationship with Israel. Despite Israel’s repeated unfaithfulness, God’s love remains unwavering. The book of Hosea beautifully i...

Image

Initially, everything may feel magical and effortless, but as time goes on, complacency can set in, leading to neglect and a loss of appreciation for our partners. While it may be unintentional, this detrimental behavior can gradually erode the bond between two individuals. In this blog, we will explore the various ways in which we tend to take each other for granted in relationships and discuss strategies for fostering a healthier, more fulfilling connection. Is Salvation by works or by Grace

Image
Some in the church in Galatia were peddling a doctrine of salvation by works. Paul asks and answers three bombshell questions of those Galatians who were trying to peddle this doctrine. These three questions and their answers stopped their salvation by works message in its tracks. You remember, of course, that Paul believed that Jesus’ blood took care of the sin problem for the human race. Now here are his three dynamite questions and their obvious answers. Question #1:  “Did the Galatians receive the Spirit by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith?”  Galatians 3:2 . In other words, can you work to receive the Spirit or is that a product of believing on Jesus and receiving Him (by faith) as your personal savior? Of course, receiving the Spirit comes by faith upon receiving Jesus as savior. Works have nothing to do with it. Paul’s logic, then, forces the conclusion that works of the law have nothing to do with the removal of our guilt and feelings of unw...

Most commentators believe that with Romans, although the letter is addressed to the church in Rome, it is a general epistle. In other words, the letter was intended all along to be a letter to all the churches. To make a distinction, consider the book of first Corinthians, this book was definitely addressed to the church in Corinth. It addressed specific needs and problems in Corinth. The same could be said for Galatians and other of Paul’s letter. In the book of Romans which is specific to the needs in Rome, therefore in deciding the purpose of the book, one should recognize that the letter is essentially intended for the church in general. Romans 12: 1( NIV ) ‘’I appeal to you therefore brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship’’.  Paul’s admonition to the believers in Rome was to sacrifice themselves to God, not as a sacrifice on the altar, as the Mosaic Law required th...
